This is excellent. The backlash against girl gamers (and girl nerds in general) is so ridiculous.

I have always liked comics and games and typical “nerd” fare. So have many other girls my age. This is because we were privileged enough to be born in a time where all of that stuff was easily accessible to children.

So to say that we are infringing upon male territory by liking the same things that boys our age like is a completely inaccurate statement. These things are no longer inherently “male.” Sure, the target audiences are usually still male because the companies that produce these games and comics and movies are typically of the archaic “no girls allowed” mentality, but girls will still play the games, read the comics, and watch the movies because that’s what we like. If we happen to see something worth criticizing or if we decide to raise awareness about a problematic theme or character or event, that is because we love these things just as much as any guy; we just want them to be the best that they can be. And if that means we have to step out of the shadow of anonymity and bare ourselves to the slings and arrows of obnoxious chauvinist internet trolls, so be it. 

From what I have observed, guy nerds often whine about the lack of girl nerds (read: hot girl nerds) when what they really want is a boy nerd with tits. It’s fucking true. They want girl nerds to shut up, to stop questioning, to stop “complaining” about negative, gratuitous, or harmful content.

We shouldn’t be the only ones pointing these things out but we are because nobody else will. For as long as anyone can remember, games and comics and actions movies and all that jazz have been For Guys, unquestionably. Guys are going to defend the companies that make all of this shit specifically for them, and cool, I get it, you like anything that panders to your fantasies and strokes your ego and tells you what a badass dude you are.

But guess what?

Guys, it’s all on you. Only you have the ability to decide that enough is enough.

These companies are buying you off with content specifically designed to please you, but the cost is your morality.
